Open letter to our fellow chasers

Dear SOTA chasers,

These last times, I am more and more concerned about some bad habits which have been spreading amongst some SOTA chasers. Perhaps the example given by a few but active and renowed chasers -whose behavior is far from being the best- has something to do with it. For the activators can be a very hard situation to be in front of a bunch of shouting people after making the effort of climbing to the summit -sometimes after hours of driving-, mount the station, and stay up there operating on cold, hot, wind, rain or snow. 

So, I finally decided to share these very simple advices to make our lives easier, and to allow your fellow chasers achieving the QSO too. Please remember that SOTA is only a competitive issue for a few, whose only interest is fame and prestige, no matter the cost.

Propuesta frecuencias VHF UHF Activaciones SOTA

Si entramos en la página de spots y alertas SOTA sotawatch3, podremos hacernos una idea de dónde se llevan a cabo las activaciones en cada banda y modo.  Si filtramos estos spots por las bandas de 2m y 70 cm y modos FM y DV, nos daremos cuenta de que las activaciones SOTA en la REGION 1 de la IARU no siguen un criterio general en cuanto a qué frecuencias usar. Parece pues interesante hacer una propuesta para "normalizarlas", teniendo en cuenta factores de uso y costumbre, adaptación a la reglamentacion, y los planes de banda de la IARU. 

Fundamentalmente nos centraremos en las bandas de 2 m (144-146 MHz) y 70 cm (430-440 MHz) y modos de FM y Digital Voice (DMR, D-Star, C4FM, etc.) mas comunes entre la comunidad SOTA.

Para ello tendremos en consideracion los siguientes aspectos,

El primero y mas importante, esta propuesta lo es a modo informativo, ya que las frecuencias y modos para las activaciones SOTA no están contempladas de forma explícita en la reglamentación, ni nacional ni internacional, por lo que no implican obligacion alguna en cuanto a su utilización. El uso de los distintos modos y/o frecuencias está restringido exclusivamente por la legislacion vigente, y por ningún otro aspecto.

Portable radio setup

 As the age goes ahead, portable setup optimization becomes a must. Rig, batteries, antenna, mast,.. all must be adapted to minimum weight and size if your plan includes hiking more than a few kilometres. Of course, the rest of the equipment must pass by the same process. Water, food, raincoat, spare clothes, emergency medical kit, mobile phone, etc. are continuosly being examined/changed to get the best results with the less possible weight.

At this moment -and leaving apart VHF/UHF activations- I managed to design and carry this CW equipment, which I consider basic and light enough. All items divided in 3 parts: equipment, antenna, and antenna support. Let's see all them!
